Disclaimer:
I offer these instructions to be helpful, as I have benefited from others who accept posted instructions. I don't guarantee the accuracy of these instructions, nor your results should y'all choose to follow them. Personal or property injury could result from following these instructions. Follow the instructions from the glue and primer vendor. Be careful. And if you don't feel comfortable doing this kind of work, please hire a trained professional person to do your repair work.
Fourth dimension required:
This should take nearly 2-three hours of work and at to the lowest degree a day for the mucilage to cure, depending on temperature and humidity.
Tools & materials required:
* Razor scraper.
* A piece of sandpaper. (Peradventure 60-100 grit or and then. Used is fine.)
* Utility knife.
* A fine point (preferably) dry-erase marker.
* 9 stick, preferably about ane thick. (Meet photos.)
* Packing record.
* A couple of rags or towels.
* A roll of paper towels.
* 3M Glass Primer- production #08682 (30ml) or #08681 (125ml). 30ml is more than enough. Available online.
* 3M Windo-Weld agglutinative 10.5 oz. tube [#08609] . Available online.
* A caulking gun.
* Several sets of latex gloves.
* Almost eight full sized towels (like you lot would employ to take a shower), rolled up tight as shown in photos.
* A driblet cloth or 2 (to protect your seats from mucilage).
* A flashlight, portable electric lantern, or utility light, and so that you can see well and work inside the dark window-well.
* Optionally, simply I'd recommend, an assistant for about 5 minutes during final gluing and taping phase.
How to fix it:
Note:
These instructions (and photos) are based on my 1996 Cavalier convertible coupe but are probably largely applicable to most convertibles of any brand or model where the glass is glued to the canvas.
Afterward gluing my window, it felt very secure and I feel confident about it holding long term. However, I am posting these instructions only ane week afterward gluing. I'll try to remember to check-in every few months to permit you know if information technology continues to hold. I'll check-in right away and let you know (by posting below) if it fails.
Groundwork:
The bottom edge and the lower half of the side edges of my rear window became detached. I did a lot of research on how to fix it. Many people had posted online that they had tried many unlike types of glue, but the general consensus was that standard glues (epoxy, gorilla glue, etc.) don't hold
. There are glues that stick to canvas, and there glues that stick to glass, but when gluing glass to canvas you need a specialized primer and glue like the 3M products listed above. (At that place may be other brands or suitable glues. I don't know.) I could non observe the same 3M adhesive products in car stores, hardware stores, or retail stores similar Walmart, so I had to club them online. They were piece of cake to notice online, simply by searching for the product name and number listed above. I got the primer and glue shipped to my house for most $30. The smallest sizes available were at least 10 times more than than I needed, and plain the gum & primer have a very short shelf-life so feel gratuitous to get the smallest size available. The instructions for the glue and primer can be found on the 3M website.
Step BY Pace INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Unlatch the roof, raise information technology near 6", and prop it up to a higher place the windshield with something (like a bunched up towel) as testify in the photo. This relieves pressure from the back window.
ii) Detach the interior plug for the window defroster if that volition exist in the way of where you need to glue.
3) Using a razor scraper, scrape all of the old glue from the areas of the window that have come up detached.
4) Use sandpaper to rough upward the shiny-smooth portions of the canvas (within & outside pieces) that volition attach to the glass. I'm non 100% certain that this footstep is necessary, but it makes sense since information technology requite the canvass some tooth for the glue to attach.
3) With a clammy rag and a dry towel, clean and dry the entire window (on both sides), the surrounding canvas, and the trunk lid. You lot'll demand that all to be cleaned and dry to the yous can properly mucilage the window and tack information technology into place with record.
4) Cut a stick to about 8-9 inches. I cut a 45 degree angle on a one" square bar of bit wood, 9 inches long. The angled end then slides snugly behind the seatback and props up the back window. Fold over a small piece of packing tape so that it's sticky on both sides, and put information technology on one end (the edgeless end) of the stick. This will continue the stick from sliding across the inside of the window. So place the stick equally shown (behind the center of the seatback) to prop up the window. Be sure to place the rod on the window
the defroster lines so that you don't accidentally take off any defroster paint. (Come across photos.)
5) Identify a drop cloth on the back seat, over the seatback, and if you're really fussy, in the window well, just in case you lot baste some (black) primer, (black) glue, or driblet the magic mark.
vi) At present that the window is propped up, test-fit the canvass on both sides, and tape it in place with a few vertically placed strips of packing record such that there are no wrinkles in the sheet.
7) Mark the window along the canvass line on both sides with a magic marker so that you'll know where to paint the primer.
8) Throw out the old tape that you lot used for the exam fit.
ix) Put on some disposable latex gloves. I'd really recommend putting on double layers of gloves and then that, if necessary, you lot can rapidly strip off the pinnacle pair if they get messed up while y'all're gluing. You don't want to go the primer or glue on the canvas, automobile body, or interior fabric, and I'd say that the well-nigh likely fashion that yous'll do that is by touching something with a dirty glove. The workable time of the glue is 15 minutes so you won't have much fourth dimension to get the job washed.
10) Pigment the 3M glass primer onto the window (both sides) using the magic marker line as your guide. FYI: The primer is black. The instructions say to apply a wool dauber, just I only used a modest disposable pigment brush. You will need to throw the paint castor away so brand certain that information technology's dispensable. Allow the primer to dry out at least 10 minutes (per the instructions on the label).
11) Remove the pull-tab from the back of the 3M Windo-Weld glue canister and place it into a caulking gun. FYI: The glue is black.
12) Cut the tip of the 3M Windo-Weld glue canister at an angle equally described in the directions for that product.
13) The instructions on the glue say that yous just need to lay a bead of glue along the window so attach the sail. But I wanted to exist certain to get the maximum possible surface contact then I likewise used my double-glove-covered index finger to rub glue across the entire portion of the exterior side of the window to exist glued, besides as rubbing the glue into the entire role of the outside canvas to be glued. Then I quickly threw abroad that top layer glove, leaving me with a clean glove beneath. I'thousand not certain that'due south all necessary, but that's what I did, and I'd practice it again. Don't use and so much gum that it will squeeze out onto the window and brand a mess. A thin (say 1mm) layer on both the drinking glass and the canvass should practise the pull a fast one on.
14) With make clean latex gloves on your hand, adhere the outside-side canvas to the window, and tape it securely into identify with some packing record, equally shown in the pictures, at beginning with some long vertical strips, and and then with some horizontal strips running the length of the canvas. Printing the canvas and the record snugly in identify, using the primer, mucilage, every bit your guideline. The glue is very tacky almost immediately, so the sail sticks about immediately, but is workable for a few minute or 2. You can exercise this alone, only you may want to enlist an assistant for the gluing and taping portion. It's pretty hard to rip off new tape with latex gloves. It's OK if some mucilage squeezes out onto the window because you can scrape it off later. It's not OK if glue gets on the canvas.
xv) With clean latex gloves, echo the gluing and taping process from the previous footstep for the interior side of the window and the interior canvas.
16) Use some rolled up towels (as shown in the photos) to concur the interior canvas confronting the window while the glue dries. (Otherwise the portion of the sheet which is not next to the tape, will tend to fall away from the window.
17) Let the glue prepare co-ordinate to the curing times listed in the instructions. The curing times vary greatly (from about 1 hour to 100 hours) depending on temperature and humidity. (The more boiling, the faster information technology cures since it's water activated.) I let mine cure for almost three days in arid California, merely to be sure.
18) Later on the glue dries, remove the record, the towels, and the prop-up stick.
19) If in that location is excess glue on the window (which is probable), use a razor scraper or utility knife, running the knife along the edge of the canvas, inside and outside, (perpendicular to the window) to cutting a line across the glue, and so that when you lot scrape off the glue, it will peel away from the window at the canvas line. Exist careful not to cutting the canvas.
20) Using a razor scraper to scrape whatsoever backlog glue from the window, inside and out. Exist careful non to scrape off the defroster paint line on the interior.
21) Remove the towel that is propping up the roof higher up the windshield, and reattach the defroster plugs if yous've disconnected them.
22) Pray that it holds and close the roof. Proficient luck!

Hullo and Thanks a ton for posting these specific directions.
Could you tell me how it'due south property up so far? I desire to try this with my girl's 2004 Beetle convertible, equally the dealership wants $2500 for new top when it'southward just some glue.....
So far, the glued window has held perfectly for 3 months. There are no signs of fatigue. I have loftier confidence that it volition hold for a long fourth dimension. FYI: I typically put the roof upward and down at least one time per twenty-four hour period here in northern California.
I don't ordinarily visit this website unless some repair chore comes up. But I will definitely mail here
immediatelyif the gum-chore always fails. If you don't encounter a post from me, then presume that my glue job has held since late May 2010.
id rather see pics of the car itself lol

I attempted the height repair on a 2004 New Protrude Convertible with l,000 miles this weekend on a Saturday. It took me virtually ii.5 hours commencement to end. It is now Tuesday evening and I accept put the pinnacle up and downwardly several times and take permit the elevation sit down out in 90 heat today in direct sun while it was airtight to see if the stretching and the heat would affect the repair. It doesn't seem to be budging at all. It is a tight seal and I took the machine to the carwash yesterday and put the loftier force per unit area water gun on the back drinking glass to make sure....no problems. The back glass was well-nigh totally unglued all the manner around. VW said only fix was a new $2,500.00 top. This is my xv year old's auto and we are not going to put that kind of money into a issues since they are prone to interruption down at any moment anyway. If you are thinking about ownership a beetle, my advice is be aware that they take major problems and yous will be dropping money on it constantly. Kinda like some girlfriends....very cute and fun, but extremely loftier-maintenance.
OK. I followed the instructions above except I didn't take to do the interior reattach, and I didn't apply the dry out erase marker and I probably should have. I idea I had a pretty skilful template of where to go with the glue by watching the defroster line around the inside of the drinking glass on the outer edge. Also, I am non very skillful at staying inside the lines, so my fix turned out a piddling rough effectually the edges...but all in all information technology works, it'southward not almost as bad as when the drinking glass was falling out, and I saved myself $two,400.00 (everything cost me well-nigh $100.00)
RazzMa Tazz.....you lot are crawly!!! Cheers for posting these thorough instructions. I know if I accept to practice this again, I will do a improve looking job next time...but it looks like it's gonna concord upward just fine.

So goodluck with the bug, and continue us posted if it ever comes apart!

Mike Demo wrote:turns out i need to do this tomorrow. are there whatsoever temp solutions while the 3m stuff comes in?

yes. get the black duct tape and it at least SORT of blends in with the motorcar. at to the lowest degree from farther away. merely who cares if its a temp fix. i had to bulldoze around similar this for almost 5 months.

im actually going to include it as a write up for my massive vert info thread that im going to post and i will make sure that is stickied in the exterior forum. basically itll be all of the vert info and write ups that ive washed and that i can find from other posters, such every bit razzmatazz. he also did a nice little write up on how to readjust our DS windows to prevent the leak at that place too.

in the long run. There are glues that stick to canvas, and in that location glues that stick to glass, but when gluing glass to canvass you demand a specialized primer and glue similar the 3M products listed above. Many people had posted online that they had tried many different types of glue, simply the general consensus was that standard glues (epoxy, gorilla glue, etc.) don't holdSTEP BY Stride INSTRUCTIONS:
between the defroster lines then that you don't accidentally accept off whatever defroster pigment. (See photos.)
1) Unlatch the roof, raise it most 6", and prop it up above the windshield with something (like a bunched upwardly towel) as evidence in the photo. This relieves pressure from the back window.
2) Disassemble the interior plug for the window defroster if that will be in the way of where you need to glue.
3) Using a razor scraper, scrape all of the quondam mucilage from the areas of the window that accept come detached.
four) Use sandpaper to rough up the shiny-smooth portions of the canvass (inside & exterior pieces) that will adhere to the drinking glass. I'm non 100% sure that this step is necessary, but it makes sense since it requite the canvass some tooth for the glue to adhere.
3) With a clammy rag and a dry towel, clean and dry the entire window (on both sides), the surrounding canvas, and the trunk lid. You'll demand that all to be cleaned and dry to the you tin properly mucilage the window and tack information technology into place with tape.
four) Cutting a stick to almost viii-9 inches. I cut a 45 degree bending on a one" square bar of scrap wood, 9 inches long. The angled end then slides snugly behind the seatback and props upwards the back window. Fold over a small piece of packing tape then that information technology's sticky on both sides, and put information technology on 1 cease (the blunt end) of the stick. This will continue the stick from sliding across the inside of the window. Then place the stick equally shown (behind the heart of the seatback) to prop up the window. Be certain to place the rod on the window
5) Identify a drop cloth on the dorsum seat, over the seatback, and if you're actually fussy, in the window well, simply in example you drip some (black) primer, (black) glue, or drop the magic mark.
6) Now that the window is propped up, exam-fit the canvas on both sides, and record it in identify with a few vertically placed strips of packing record such that there are no wrinkles in the sail.
7) Mark the window along the canvas line on both sides with a magic marker so that you'll know where to paint the primer.
8) Throw out the old tape that you used for the test fit.
nine) Put on some dispensable latex gloves. I'd actually recommend putting on double layers of gloves and so that, if necessary, you lot tin speedily strip off the top pair if they get messed upwardly while you lot're gluing. You don't want to get the primer or glue on the sail, auto body, or interior material, and I'd say that the most likely way that you'll practice that is past touching something with a dirty glove. The workable time of the mucilage is 15 minutes so you won't accept much fourth dimension to get the job done.
10) Paint the 3M glass primer onto the window (both sides) using the magic marker line as your guide. FYI: The primer is blackness. The instructions say to use a wool dauber, but I just used a small dispensable paint brush. You volition need to throw the paint brush away so make sure that it's disposable. Allow the primer to dry out at least 10 minutes (per the instructions on the label).
11) Remove the pull-tab from the back of the 3M Windo-Weld glue canister and place it into a caulking gun. FYI: The glue is black.
12) Cut the tip of the 3M Windo-Weld glue canister at an bending as described in the directions for that product.
13) The instructions on the gum say that y'all simply demand to lay a bead of glue along the window and then attach the canvas. Simply I wanted to be certain to get the maximum possible surface contact so I also used my double-glove-covered index finger to rub glue beyond the entire portion of the exterior side of the window to be glued, as well as rubbing the gum into the unabridged function of the exterior canvas to be glued. And then I quickly threw away that top layer glove, leaving me with a clean glove beneath. I'one thousand not sure that'southward all necessary, simply that'due south what I did, and I'd do it again. Don't apply so much glue that it will squeeze out onto the window and make a mess. A thin (say 1mm) layer on both the glass and the sail should exercise the trick.
14) With clean latex gloves on your mitt, attach the exterior-side sail to the window, and tape it securely into place with some packing record, as shown in the pictures, at first with some long vertical strips, and then with some horizontal strips running the length of the canvas. Press the canvas and the tape snugly in place, using the primer, glue, as your guideline. The mucilage is very tacky about immediately, so the canvas sticks well-nigh immediately, merely is workable for a few minute or 2. You lot tin can practise this alone, just y'all may want to enlist an banana for the gluing and taping portion. It's pretty hard to rip off new tape with latex gloves. It's OK if some glue squeezes out onto the window because you can scrape it off later on. Information technology's not OK if glue gets on the canvass.
fifteen) With clean latex gloves, repeat the gluing and taping process from the previous step for the interior side of the window and the interior sail.
16) Use some rolled up towels (every bit shown in the photos) to concord the interior canvas against the window while the gum dries. (Otherwise the portion of the sail which is not next to the tape, volition tend to autumn away from the window.
17) Permit the glue ready co-ordinate to the curing times listed in the instructions. The curing times vary profoundly (from virtually i hr to 100 hours) depending on temperature and humidity. (The more than humid, the faster it cures since it's water activated.) I let mine cure for most iii days in arid California, just to exist sure.
xviii) Later on the gum dries, remove the tape, the towels, and the prop-upwards stick.
19) If in that location is backlog mucilage on the window (which is likely), use a razor scraper or utility knife, running the knife along the border of the canvas, inside and outside, (perpendicular to the window) to cut a line beyond the glue, so that when you scrape off the glue, it will peel away from the window at the sail line. Be conscientious not to cut the canvas.
xx) Using a razor scraper to scrape whatever excess glue from the window, inside and out. Be careful non to scrape off the defroster paint line on the interior.
21) Remove the towel that is propping upward the roof above the windshield, and reattach the defroster plugs if you've disconnected them.
22) Pray that it holds and close the roof. Adept luck!Photos are at the following link:

I want to thank you all for taking the fourth dimension to help others with similar problem's
I live in florida and have a 96 sebring convertable piece of @#$! this thing leaks everywhere the nearly recent leak is the back window fell in on the bottom.
Let'due south say I am officially a duct tape nija, which is a very temporary solution for anyone who is going to attempt it I propose non to even bother in the summertime because the glue on the tape melts and the weight of the window makes it only autumn in.
I live in florida and got lots of do taping this window.
I went to several junkyards to notice a summit and believe it or not I establish a top that looked brand new with the execption of the back window the exterior role on the lesser was unglued( only on the exterior),I took the whole frame and all figuring i could bring information technology to a automobile top place and they could merely re mucilage it...WRONG They told me i needed the pall function of the top (dorsum textile with window already installed) the cost $450.00 I spent $200.00 on the tiptop from the junkyard and a new top is $750.00
The old top is in pretty bad shape so I am going to put the new top on and effort to set information technology,I figure worst case senerio is information technology dont work and I have to purchase the curtian not the whole top which i would have done, if I knew what I practise know.considering if this don't work I'm in information technology for $650,00
After researching this subject for about 3 hours I came across this forum Im going to endeavour the suggested set above I really hope this works for I have spend style likewise much time playing with duct tape oh and pvc cement mucilage which really did pretty well forth with the duct tape.
I'm going to attempt to fix this on thanksgiving so if anyone has whatever other words of wisdom on fixing this please feel costless to let me hear them.I'll take a few pictures for anyone in the future along with some on how to get the whole top off..which was actually pretty like shooting fish in a barrel,I'll be checking dorsum daily for whatever suggestions..
Thank you all very much I cannot wait for this nightmare to exist over........Jeff
I take a question I merely thought of ...what would exist suggestions as far every bit should I put the pinnacle on and then ready it or practise ya"ll think it would be easier with the tiptop off the machine???
I swapped the whole top on my girls 96 condescending convertible also. Its a really easy job, simply getting to everything is a existent pain. Information technology will be easier to fix the window issue with information technology on the car. But brand sure y'all take plenty room with the bottom fabric to exist glued onto the window. Funny affair is I acutally owned two sebring convertibles (a 96 and a 98) and my 96 had that issue. I really used some 3M weatherstip agglutinative and lifted the top just enough to reattach the bottom of the valence to the window, glued it, left information technology like that over nighttime (information technology was in a garage) and came out the next day and it was good. Only bad function was the top was gold, and the mucilage was brilliant yellowish. So i took a peice of windshield vinyl sticker, and put it over the glue strip and it covered it up nicely. Goodluck with ur project, and if yous accept whatsoever more than questions, feel free to ask!!
FYI: Just checking back in to let y'all know that my glue chore is still holding perfectly later on ten months.
Not bad! least at present nosotros know it works. Turns out the correct rear corner of my window is starting to come up up. I recall it will exist time to reglue mine also. also this really needs to exist a pasty!!!!!
